People said Ayanda Dlamini was dangerous.

They said she fought boys, skipped classes, smoked outside campus gates and looked at people as if she was daring them to speak to her.

Naledi Molefe had promised herself she would never go near girls like that.

But October has a way of changing promises.

The first time Naledi saw Ayanda, she was standing outside the university library wearing a black hoodie, hands in her pockets, laughing at something her friends had said.

For some reason, Naledi could not look away.

"Ungamgqolozeli kanjalo," her friend whispered. "Uyingozi lowo."

Naledi smiled to herself.
